That’s right. Booze! This is a very beneficial item to stock. The uses are numerous. All types of alcohol are good. You may prefer some to others such as vodka over whiskey or tequila over vodka. But they will all be equally as effective.
You may want to get some of those big plastic bottles of pure grain alcohol so as to mix and dilute it to make it last. However smaller, plastic pint bottles will be easier to transport and barter with.
First, The obvious (read that FUN)
Drink it. You’ll have to be careful depending on the situation you are in. Remember, alcohol messes with your decision making and concept of time. Two things you don’t want compromised when trouble may be afoot. But, if the situation warrants, then it can be a real stress reducer and morale booster to sit by a fire and have a couple shots with your friends and/or family.
Remember not to over do it. You don’t want to make poor decisions, waste the alcohol or sleep so deeply you don’t hear people or animals coming into your camp and taking your precious supplies.
There are health benefits to consuming alcohol. Although they seem to benefit post-menopausal women and men in the same age category more than their younger counterparts. Research suggests that light to moderate drinking may help reduce the risk of diabetes in later life, certain types of stroke, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease. None of which are ailments you want to deal with in a scenario where there are no hospitals or doctors.
No, I’m not drunk. Alcohol will clean and deodorize your clothes. Put a little booze onto your clothing before a wash; especially where your stinky bits rest (crotch, armpits, etc). If your clothes aren’t very dirty in the first place, spray them down with some booze and then hang them up to dry. Alcohol will kill the bacteria. And if you use vodka, it won’t leave a smell or stain your clothes.
Because alcohol is a powerful germ killer, you can swish a bit of it around in your mouth, effectively killing the germs that cause bad breath. It will also clean the bacteria from your teeth and gums helping keep your teeth and mouth healthy longer. As discussed before, you will also want to have your toothbrush so as to force food and plaque out from between the teeth and the gum bed.
If you’re running low or have run out of proper antiseptics from your IFAK, you can dump alcohol over cuts and abrasions and kill any germs lurking around in there. This is very effective but you aren’t going to want to use a schnapps or other sweet, flavored booze. These will attract flies, bees and other sugar loving bugs.
Another good use for booze like vodka and other unscented, unflavored libations is shoe deodorizer. Dump a little vodka into those stinky, old boots and let it dry. BAM! No more stink.
Vodka will also kill mold and mildew. If you’re hunkering down in an old building for awhile, you may want to wipe the bathroom down with it. Mold can cause some pretty serious health issues.
Ethanol burns very hot and very clean making it an ideal fuel source for indoor lamps and stoves. You may also want to use a few drops to get a stubborn fire to blaze up.
This super efficient burning trait also makes it perfect for Molotov Cocktails. But that is pretty extreme. Let’s hope your situation doesn’t warrant such measures.
